Chateau Chantal, maybe the most beautiful winery up North! |
We weren't ready to finish our trip up north....but we were done looking at sand dunes for the time being, so we hopped in the car for a road trip up north! We headed to Traverse city for a day out on the Grand Traverse Bay, to sample some wines, and to hunt for Petoskey stones further north. After driving north we were aching to get out on the Bay! After some beach time we drove to the end of the Mission Point Peninsula, one the way back we knew we had to stop at a winery.
I love wine but I am fairly narrow in my tastes. I prefer white wine (chardonnay and moscato, the sweet stuff) but I always like to try new stuff. The place we went, Chateau Chantal, was like a castle overlooking the bay. When you get there you fill out a scantron sheet of all the wines you want and they hook you up! Once the tasting room opened, it really filled up (esp the deck). I will definitely be coming back with my girlfriends or bringing my mom.
That night there were absolutely NO rooms available in Traverse City! Since we were on a "spur of the moment" trip we drove further north and stayed in Petoskey. Fall in Northern Michigan is busy because people are all going North to see the fall colors- we just happened to be there on a fantastic weekend while we could also go out on the water and start seeing fall colors!
There was an upside to our night in Petoskey! The next morning we hunted Petoskey stones, something I've always wanted to do!
Petoskey stones are found in the Traverse City area and are a remnant of ancient coral reefs. They have a distinct pitting and six-sided eyes. The Petoskey Stone is the state stone of Michigan.
Hunting them is a definite must if you're in the area!

My stone isn't the best example, but it will awesome after after being polished up! |

Searching takes dedication! Make sure you're looking in the right places. |
